Scoring extremely well on the USMLE Step 1 exam is so vitally important today as the competition is so dense for residency positions. There are now a lot more applicants than there are available spots in United States residency programs, so if you don't do very well on your Step 1 exam you have the risk of not matching and never realizing your dreams of being a practicing physician.
I would like to tell you about a few tips I was given by some of my tutors while undergoing medical school, they are:
Tip #1 - Start preparing early
Ideally you have to be in the USMLE-mindset on your first day of medical school, simply because the two years leading up to your Step 1 are supposed to prepare you to ace the Step 1 exam. Therefore, get your mind in the game early and know that whatever you do is ultimately done to do well on your boards and have the residency position of your dreams.
Tip #2 - Do practice questions in batches of 40
The
USMLE Step 1 gives you 40 questions during each block, it is therefore best that you practice specifically as you are going to experience the real thing.
Tip #3 - Keep a workbook of your qbank answers and also explanations
The qbank questions you do are invaluable to your learning experience, so ensure you take brilliant notes on every single question you come across, as the information you are gaining is very likely to come up at some point during your real exam.
Tip #4 - Use a study guide together with your class work
We all know how important a good study guide is to our review, thus give yourself a favor and make use of a study guide as soon as possible simply so you can incorporate some high-yield notes inside and absolutely master everything inside that guide.
Tip #5 - Do a minimum of 2 NBME practice exams
These exams are very close to the real exams, so you want to see where you stand and assess if you are able to sit for the real USMLE Step 1.
Tip #6 - Keep a PowerPoint collection of your pathology images
There are plenty of pictures these days on the Step 1 exam, and most of them are associated with pathology, so simply find an image when you are reading your path notes and insert it to a PowerPoint presentation on your PC. Do this early and when you are ready to study hard you'll have a huge file all set to go.
